Menstrual Disorders

The Problem of Menstrual Disorders

Menstruation is like a comprehensive monthly health evalation that can reveal details about your physical and emotional health. The timing of ovulation, the symptoms of pain, emotional fluctuations, breast tenderness, the color and consistency of the blood, and the heaviness of the bleeding all reveal information about hormonal imbalances, and the presence of concerns such as endometriosis or more serious conditions.

For most women though menstrual problems are quite literally a big monthly physical pain often accompanied by unpleasant emotional swings including anxiety and depression.

Menstrual irregularities can result from many causes including emotional imbalances such as stress, anger, and excessive worry. Long term use of prescription medications including antibiotics and oral contraceptives is also a major contributing cause. Poor diet, insufficient sleep, too much sexual activity, and other physical conditions also have an impact.

Natural Treatment for Menstrual Problems

Western medicine typically treats menstrual disorders with powerful prescription medications. While these can be effective in reducing symptoms they do not normally address the cause so the condition remains, only to resurface later when treatments are completed. Many women also experience unpleasant side-effects from prescription medications.

Chinese Medicine views menstrual disorders as a condition of disharmony and systemic imbalance of the body. The menstrual cycle is dependent on the body having sufficient amounts yin, yang, Qi, and blood, and in the proper balance. Pain, irregularities, or other systems may result if one or more of these becomes unbalanced.

Acupuncture is very effective in helping to regulate the menstrual cycle. At Alchemy we start with a diagnosis to discover the nature of the patient's specific imbalances based on health history, pulse and tongue diagnosis, and lifestyle. We then develop an individual treatment plan tailored for the patient that will include, Acupuncture and customized Chinese herbal formulas.

Sometimes dietary changes can result in big improvements with menstrual disorders. In our experience, moving women away from processed foods to a diet based on organic and/or local whole foods can lead to radical improvements. Based on this experience we always include a food plan as part of any treatment program.

While many women see quick improvements with our programs, it takes time for the body to adjust hormone levels and balance out the menstrual cycle so we typically recommend a program of 3-6 months to achieve lasting results.
